De Hoop is a windmill that was built in 1870 by Theodore Smeets and Sofia Beunen. The mill mainly ground grain and could be used to crush oats. It is still considered one of the most beautiful windmills in Flanders.
De Hoop is a unique windmill because it played an important role in the development of the windmills of Flanders and the Netherlands. In 1933, millwright Chris Van Bussel tested a new type of blade system. This new streamline profile was eventually used at more than 300 windmills in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
