Bilzen is often associated with the Jazz Bilzen of the 1960s. That era is over, but the festival has made Bilzen known everywhere. Terms like "Demerstadje" and "terrasjes" are often linked to Bilzen. Both are very eloquent: you can peacefully enjoy nature there, but also savor the pleasures of the city, which include the pleasant terraces. In the city center, visitors will find interesting buildings, such as the town hall of 1686, the Sint-Mauritius church, one of the few hall churches in our region, and the Taalmuseum (Dutch Language Museum). The latter is located in the town hall and deals with the origin of Dutch, particularly from the oldest written texts. You can also learn about the origins of our surnames.
