Gijzenzele is a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders and a part of the municipality of Oosterzele. The total area is 1.87 km² and it has a population of about 1000. The oldest mention is from 864 as Gisingasale, which is a combination of a personal name and sala, a central building. It probably came as early as the 7th century by donation to the Ghent Saint Bavo Abbey as one of the oldest possessions. Here was a large farm, the Hof van Gijzenzele from which the forests in the area were cleared by the Abbey. In the 16th century Gijzenzele came to the bishop of Ghent. Administratively, Gijzenzele belonged to the Land of Rode which was part of the Land of Aalst.
