In 1940, between May 22 and 30, fierce fighting took place for the bunkers of Gijzenzele.
Starting from May 20, the defense of Belgian territory was organized from Ghent. The Germans chose not to attack near the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, but rather in the vicinity of the Scheldt. Heavy fighting occurred in the area of Kwatrecht and Gijzenzele, with the number of casualties on both sides rising dramatically. Ultimately, Ghent fell into German hands on May 23, forcing the Belgian army to withdraw to the Leie and the drainage canal, the last outpost.
