Before the closing of the shipyard, Baasrode was known as a shipbuilding village. Currently, one can learn about the inland shipping past at the shipping museum, where numerous ship models, prints, and other exhibits illustrate the history of inland shipping.
Moreover, Baasrode is located along the tourist steam railway line Dendermonde-Puurs. This line includes the Baasrode-Noord station, the "headquarters" of the non-profit organization SDP (Steam Train Dendermonde Puurs), which manages the line. Here, one can view a collection of old railway materials (locomotives, carriages, and coaches, signaling equipment) and ride on an old steam train on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the months of June, July, August, and September.
