Bavegem also got its share of the war in WWI. This is the report of the then pastor Baert:
"In 1916, twenty-two were sent to Germany for the requisition of the workmen, and at the beginning of 1918 more than a hundred were sent to the western front, in the suide of the province of West Flanders: there a workman, namely Hendrik de Beir, died in the hospital in Deinze."
"It should not be said that many farmers were punished with large and small fines and many civilians suffered many extortions: the German court martial is therefore well known."
"There were 58 soldiers, but not one volunteered to volunteer: five died or died in the hospitals; One soldier has lost his right arm and another is staying in an insane asylum."
