Did you know that Hoogstraten and Turnhout had a tough time in the early 17th century? It was a military front area between the two Netherlands. Several times there were attempts to make those areas neutral territory. It was only in 1648, after the Peace of Münster, that Hoogstraten and Turnhout were no longer a military frontier area and became a quieter border region between the two Netherlands.
