Beek was first mentioned in 1155 and is named after the Abeek that flows north of Beek.
Like Bree, Beek was part of the domain of Britte before 1007, which was owned by Count Ansfried, the founder of the Abbey of Thorn. This domain was divided after 1007, with Beek remaining under the mentioned Abbey. The guardianship of the property ultimately fell into the hands of the Count of Loon. The church was likely founded by the Abbey and was initially a daughter church of the one in Kessenich. In 1741, the recluses from Mariëndal came from Bree to Beek and cared for the mentally ill there. The hermitage was dissolved during the French period at the end of the 18th century.
