Huys De Cocker is named after Jozef De Cocker, local expert, who lived here until 2002. His archive is also kept here, which contains a wealth of regional historical information. This house was built at the end of the 18th century. An oak beam in the main room bears the inscription 1775. The house is built of Scheldesteen, wschl. baked in one of the field ovens here in the lakes of the Scheldt valley at the foot of Melsen. Cyriel De Cocker, father of Jozef, operated a number of large field ovens on the Scheldt from 1921.
Jozef De Cocker worked here on his book about the history of Melsen. He also collected a mass of data about the region. You can still see that information in the historical archive that is located here.
