At the place where for centuries Franciscan sisters lived, the cheese farm Catharinadal is located. In this historic farm, the Boonen family lives and works, near the center of Achel. Brothers Bert and Peter started in 1990 to make butter and cheese from the milk of 60 cows. Later on, herb cheese and yogurt were added, and now they sell about 210 homemade dairy products, including the now world-famous “Grevenbroecker” blue cheese, which won the “Caseus Award” in Lyon in 2009, considered the world championship of cheeses. The main base product of Catharinadal is fresh milk. This is supplied by about 100 red and white "long live" cows that graze on approximately 20 hectares of grass and clover pastures. Thanks to the daily fresh milk, Catharinadal can guarantee the best quality for fresh cheese, dairy, and ice cream products; they produce cheese just as it was made 500 years ago in the Kempen region, a natural product made from raw milk that contains no additives other than salt.
