The Blaarmolen

The Blaarmolen is a Belgian watermill on the Jeker. It is a undershot mill. It served as a grain mill, but in the last decades of its existence, it was used for grinding animal feed ingredients. Under the Ancien Régime, it was a forced mill.
The mill is named after the hamlet of Blaar, which is located to the east of Tongeren. It was a village that was part of the Stadsvrijheid Tongeren, but around 1800 it was incorporated into the city of Tongeren. The oldest mention dates from 1235, as molendinum de Blale. In the following centuries, the mill was repeatedly mentioned.
In 1970, the Jeker was canalized, resulting in the relocation of the riverbed, so the mill could no longer operate. The mill pond was preserved. Since then, grinding has been done electrically. Since 1995, the mill has only been used as a residence.
In its current state, the mill is an elongated building with the narrow side facing the water. This side is constructed from sandstone. In 1966, a modern miller's house was built against it. The western façade dates from the 17th century, but renovations took place in the 18th and 19th centuries. The wheel is made of iron and was installed in 1880.
