Tumuli are earthen mounds covered with trees and shrubs. These mounds have traditionally been called 'Tom' in our region. This regional name makes it clear that we are standing before a burial monument (tomb). These burial mounds date back to the Roman era. They are usually referred to as tumulus. It is essentially an excavated grave, in which the cremated remains of the deceased and remains of burnt offerings were interred. Other accompanying objects such as earthenware and bronze cookware, glass, jewelry, ointment bottles, and toiletries are expressions of the belief in an afterlife that continues the daily activities of life and reverence for the gods. Tools and furniture were also placed on the floor of the burial chamber.
Tumuli are mainly located along or near ancient roads and large agricultural enterprises.
The majority of the Haspengouw tumuli date back to the 2nd century AD, during the period of Pax Romana.
In our province, we encounter around 70 tumuli. Many have disappeared due to pillaging, overgrowth, or have been excavated for agricultural reasons.
Now they are secured and opened up to the public for cultural tourism. The remaining tumuli are legally protected as monuments.
