Hoegaarden

Hoegaarden is a white beer originating from Hoegaarden in Belgium. It is available in over 70 countries. It is a brand of the AB InBev group, the largest brewer in the world. It is produced at the Hoegaarden Brewery. The Hoegaarden beer is an example of the witbier style, a white wheat beer. This style, the first belonging to the so-called "white" beers, was created by the monks of the village of Hoegaarden around 1445. The first brewed white beers were very sour until the monks added orange peel and coriander, ingredients sourced from the colony of Curaçao. The brewing industry in Hoegaarden prospered, and by 1736, the village had 36 breweries and 110 malt houses. However, after the French Revolution, the village gradually lost significance, and in the face of the booming sales of blonde beer, the style disappeared with the closure of the Thomsin brewery in 1957.
