The Bantmolen or Binnemolen is located in the center of Merchtem, near the church with a connection to the church pond. The mill was mentioned as early as 1269. Until around 1320 it was a mill of the dukes of Brabant, who gave it to the Pipenpoy's (lords of Merchtem), in the 15th century a trotting mill.
On October 29, 1595, an "Onsser Liever Vrouwen maeltijdt" was held in Merchtem. Among the members we find: "Guillam Verhagen moilder". Perhaps a miller at the Binnenmolen or at another mill in Merchtem?
In 1902, the water wheel, which stood inside, was replaced by a Francis turbine (Schneider-Jacquet company from Neudorf near Strasbourg). This turbine is still present and is located in the cogwheel pit, such as at the Oyenbrug mill in Grimbergen.
Currently, the building is operated as a tavern restaurant "De Passerel".
With thanks to Aimé Smeyers, Alsemberg and Dirk Vansintjan, Rotselaar.
