Loye

The castle of Loye is an authentic moated castle with moat and remains of a drawbridge, a large elongated castle farm with gatehouse, dovecote, bakehouse, coach house with typical round-arched gates, etc. Currently, the family de Fabribeckers de Cortils et Grâce lives in the castle. Over time, the property has been inhabited by the most illustrious families in the region. The most famous owner was Jan-Lodewijk van Elderen, who was Prince-Bishop of Liège from 1688 to 1694. The castle building was built around a medieval keep from 1429 (which has since disappeared). It has undergone numerous renovations and has become a curious amalgam of various architectural styles. The house chapel (rear) is Gothic. Important parts are in Mosan Renaissance style with the typical 'bacon layers' (1649) and in classicist style (1784). The two windows on the left side of the east side (in the photo on the left) are painted ('trompe l'oeils'). The castle is located on an attached domain of approximately 300 hectares that includes a valuable nature reserve with important forests and ponds and is home to rare plant and animal species (including mushrooms).
