Description

Ghent's economic fortunes changed in the 18the century as a result of the criminal actions of Lieven Bauwens. He smuggled the British spinning machinery into town during the Napoleonic blockade. So indirectly he was responsible for the poverty and exploitation by Ghent's working class. Did you know he was so unpopular that he had to spend most of his time in France. Now he has a statue in Ghent.
