St. Peter's Station

Description

Karel van de Woestijne was once the "prisoner" of the Germans for two hours in July 1916. Although he had obtained permission to do so, he was not allowed to enter the stage city of Ghent and had to wait two hours for the next train: "I bought cigars. I tasted all the brands that were available there. In the meantime I studied the station: I have hated it hitherto; Now I thought it was extraordinarily judicious, because imprisonment makes one lenient when judging architecture. (...) I ventured to the waiting room. Inside the waiting room was a monumental counter in neo-Gothic style, equipped with gleaming beer pumps."
