Westvleteren was located outside the front held by Commonwealth troops during the First World War. In July 1917, in preparation for the upcoming Allied offensive, 'Casualty Clearing Stations' were established at three locations named Mendinghem, Dozinghem, and Bandaghem.
The 4th, 47th, and 61st Casualty Clearing Stations were stationed at Dozinghem, and the cemetery was used by them until spring 1918.
There are now 3,174 Commonwealth war dead from the First World War and 65 German graves. There are also 73 victims from the Allied withdrawal to Dunkirk in May 1940. The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.
