Westvleteren si trovava durante la prima guerra mondiale al di fuori del fronte tenuto dalle truppe del Commonwealth. Nel luglio del 1917, in preparazione dell'imminente offensiva alleata, furono istituiti tre "Casualty Clearing Stations" con i nomi di Mendinghem, Dozinghem e Bandaghem.
Il 4°, il 47° e il 61° Casualty Clearing Stations ricevettero un posto a Dozinghem e il cimitero fu utilizzato da questi fino alla primavera del 1918.
Ora ci sono 3174 morti del Commonwealth della prima guerra mondiale e 65 tombe tedesche. Ci sono anche 73 vittime della ritirata alleata a Dunkerque nel maggio del 1940.
Il cimitero fu progettato da Sir Reginald Blomfield.
