Westvleteren se trouvait pendant la première guerre mondiale en dehors du front occupé par les troupes du Commonwealth. En juillet 1917, en préparation de la prochaine offensive alliée, trois 'Stations de triage des blessés' furent établies aux noms de Mendinghem, Dozinghem et Bandaghem.
Les 4ème, 47ème et 61ème Stations de triage des blessés reçurent un poste à Dozinghem et le cimetière fut utilisé par celles-ci jusqu'au printemps 1918.
Il y a maintenant 3174 morts du Commonwealth de la première guerre mondiale et 65 tombes allemandes. Il y a également 73 victimes de la retraite alliée vers Dunkerque en mai 1940. Le cimetière a été conçu par Sir Reginald Blomfield.
