The Vrijbos, which you may know from the Bakelandt band of robbers, became the premier strategic point for the Germans during World War I. The forest was interwoven with a network of railways connected to the Staden-Westrozebeke railway line. This allowed them to easily transport their heavy equipment and artillery. The forest gradually transformed into a war arsenal for the German army. In September 1918, the offensive against the German army was initiated. Only shattered tree trunks remained of the Houthulst woods. Currently, the forest is a beautiful walking area with over 5 km of walking trails.
Open to visit from sunrise to sunset.
