For the origin of this village, we have to go back to the year 1138, when the name of "Ramsecapel" is mentioned for the first time: Hrabnas kapella = chapel of the German Hraban.
At the beginning of the 11th century Ramskapelle was almost completely flooded by the seawater. The monks of the Dune abbey in Koksijde played an important role in draining by reclamation. This is the reason why some medieval farms as e.g. "De Hemme" bear an honorary title of "abbey farm".
The front line position during the First World War was a disaster for the constructional patrimony. At the end of 1918 this polder village was a large heap of rubble. At the beginning of the twenties the village was reconstructed. Just across the no longer used railway track, at the gable of the first house, there is a commemorative plate for the 14th line regiment, one of many war memories in this IJzer village. A small monument tells that the regiment participated gloriously in the conquest of Ramskapelle on 31st October 1914. However, it lost more than 100 men.
In 1971 Ramskapelle, with its 1528 ha considerably larger than Nieuwpoort, was administratively added to Nieuwpoort.
