Hornu is a village and former mining village in the Belgian province of Hainaut and a part of the Walloon municipality of Boussu. Until January 1, 1977, Hornu was an independent municipality. The place is best known as the location of the historic mining site of Le Grand-Hornu, a complex of industrial buildings and residential areas built at the beginning of the 19th century by order of the French industrialist Henri De Gorge. After the mine closure in 1954 and years of decay, complete demolition was imminent, which was only prevented by the purchase of the site by a local architect who began the restoration on his own initiative. Afterwards, the site was taken over by the Province of Hainaut, which has since housed the MAC's.
