Boorsem is a part of the municipality of Maasmechelen, located on the Meuse, in Belgium. Kotem is a hamlet of Boorsem.
Boorsem initially belonged to the Carolingian domain of Stein-Elsloo. It was a free lordship. The oldest known Lords belonged to the Van Altena family. At the beginning of the 14th century, Boorsem was annexed to the estate of Rekem. In 1623 Boorsem was elevated to the status of a barony, which depended on Rekem. Ecclesiastical authorities also had important possessions in Boorsem. These were successively the Abbey of Herkenrode, the Abbey of Hocht and the Abbey of Beaurepart.
