Rillaar was also called "the village of the blind". But "blind" does not refer to people with a visual impairment but to the shutters in front of the windows (also called blinds) that have been closed. During the harvest season, a large part of the population of Rillaar moved away from the village, across the language border, to harvest beets in the richer Wallonia. And during that period, the shutters were drawn. Pascal Verbeken describes in a remarkable way how in the village school the children were put to sleep in the classroom after the season to recover from the hard work.
