Letterhoutem is a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders and a district of the municipality of Sint-Lievens-Houtem. It has an area of 4.59 km² and has 1,224 inhabitants. The place is located in the Dender region. In 1140, it was mentioned as Holthem. "Hout" stands for forest and "hem" for residence or estate. Letterhoutem was thus a residence by the forest. Later, the name evolved to Lettelhoutem which means "small Houtem". In Latin charters, the village was referred to as Parvo Houthem, where "parvus" is a Latin word for small. The name Littelhouthem dates back to 1336. Later, the forms Lettelhoutem and eventually Letterhoutem were encountered again.
