Elen is a village in the Belgian province of Limburg and a part of the municipality of Dilsen-Stokkem. The village had more than 2300 inhabitants in 2008 and had previously only grown gradually. Elen is located in the east of the province, near the Dutch border and the river Maas.The village is first mentioned in the year 1150 as Hellini, then in 1179 as Jelne, in 1229 as Heelne and further as Eelen and Elen. Hellini could be derived from Halina, meaning "hard dry soil," or from Aljo.)
