Asse was one of the four main cities of the Nervii, alongside Elewijt, Binche, and Blicquy. The Nervii were a Belgian tribe that lived during the time of the conquest by Julius Caesar in the north of France and the south of Belgium, between the Scheldt and Sambre. The tribe controlled an important section of the major trade route from Cologne to Amiens (the Chaussée Brunehaut).
