Leers-Nord

Leers-Nord is a village in the Walloon municipality of Steenput in the Belgian province of Hainaut. Leers-Nord is located near the French border. On the other side of the border is the French commune of Leers.
The French Leers and Belgian Leers-Nord formed a whole in the Kasselrij Lille for a long time. At the Treaty of Aachen between France and Spain in 1668, France was granted a number of territories in the current Nord department, which was confirmed by the Treaty of Nijmegen. However, due to the old feudal system, the border still had an erratic course in various places, sometimes with enclaves. A commission was supposed to define the borders, but it was not until 22 August 1769 that a border treaty was signed between the French king Louis XV and Maria Theresa of Austria. Leers was fully annexed to the French kingdom. Ecclesiastically, Leers, on the other hand, remained under the Diocese of Tournai. The road from Tournai to Menen ran through Leers and therefore across the border, which met with resistance due to tolls. In 1779-1780 a new treaty was signed under Louis XVI. Leers was now divided into two. Leers-Nord joined the Tournai in the Austrian Netherlands, Leers-Sud remained in the French Kasselrij Lille.
