Surice is a village in the Belgian municipality of Philippeville, located in the southwest of the province of Namur, with a population of no more than 500 inhabitants. Until January 1, 1977, it was an independent municipality. At the beginning of World War I, on August 25, 1914, a massacre of the civilian population was carried out by German invasion troops in the village, resulting in the deaths of 69 people. The village was burned to the ground, with only 8 of the 138 houses remaining intact. Three monuments in the village commemorate this event: the war memorial in the village square, a column by the church, and a memorial site at the entrance of the village at the location of the massacre.
