Genoelselderen has been a part of the Belgian municipality of Riemst in Haspengouw since 1977 and is located along the highway that connected Tongeren with Maastricht. The village had 544 inhabitants in 2016.
In 1157, the domain of Heldren or Aldor was first mentioned in writing. Genoel comes from Godenoel, who was lord of Elderen in the 13th century.
