This idyllic fisherman's cottage is a protected monument. It was built in the late 19th century in a dug-out piece of dune. Once, dozens of such homes must have stood in the area, but many disappeared as fishing became more industrialized and fishermen increasingly became regular laborers.
There was less and less need for specific fishermen's houses, where fish was cleaned, stored, and sometimes sold in a stable next to the house itself.
At the fisherman's house on Duinenweg, the stable is attached to the facade on the left. Apparently, the resident of this fisherman's cottage was also a pigeon lover: holes are still visible in the right facade that gave the pigeons access to a pigeon loft.
