Description

The ferry of Appels-Berlare is already mentioned in documents from 1255. On old maps there is the mention 'Appelsveer', but the inhabitants on the other side of the street speak of the 'ferry of Berlare'. As with other ferries, animals, wheelbarrows and carts used to be ferried over. The surroundings of the ferry served as a backdrop in the Flemish cult film 'Mira', based on Stijn Streuvels' novel 'De teleurgang van de Waterhoek'. In the same film, the Mira bridge over the Durme in Hamme also appears.
