Saint Dymphna's Chapel, Zammel
The Saint Dymphna Chapel is located on the Sint-Gerebernusstraat in Zammel, a hamlet of Geel. Legend has it that Saints Dymphna and Gerebernus lived in a hut in Zammel for several months. A chapel was built near this hut in the middle of the 17th century. It soon became too small, given the large influx of pilgrims. In 1692 the construction of a larger chapel was started, which was thoroughly rebuilt and restored in 1780. In the chapel there is an altar with a statue of Saint Dymphna dating from 1711. The old well next to the chapel was already visited by pilgrims in the Middle Ages because of the healing water it supposedly contained. The lime tree in front of the chapel door is said to have been planted around 1670. In 2003, the chapel was protected as a monument.
