The Charleroi Canal is an key axis of our Brussels landscape. Created for economic reasons in the first half of the 19th century, its purpose was to transport raw materials from the south of Belgium to Brussels for processing in the many factories and industries located along its route. Over time and with the de-industrialisation, it has become a dividing line between neighbourhoods and an area of economic gloom. Today, many projects aim to turn the canal into the ‘river of Brussels’ or at least into a link between the various municipalities of Brussels, notably via the ambitious CANAL plan.
