They must have known that Brussels, as a toponym, refers to marshy ground when constructing metro line 3.
The famous metro line 3 was to run beneath the Palais des Beaux-Arts. A special technique was chosen to excavate a new metro tunnel 120 meters long under the monumental Palais des Beaux-Arts: jet grouting. However, it turned out to be unsuitable for the marshy Brussels soil. The cement injected into the ground under high pressure refused to form vertical columns and instead washed away.
