The Beevaartweg is a beautiful path that runs between the center of Vlezenbeek to the hamlet of Purgatory, located at the cemetery of Vlezenbeek. The name and trajectory of this path has probably been fixed since the Middle Ages. In the 13th-14th centuries, the story arose of a miraculous appearance of a statue of Our Lady in Vlezenbeek that attracted many pilgrims and caused a flourishing of the village. Other sources report that the name of this path refers to the numerous pilgrims who passed by here but on their way to the nearby town of Halle, which had been an important Marian pilgrimage site since the 13th century.
