Only the first 2 locks are still in operation for the many houseboats on the first section of the canal
At the towns of Ronquières, Arquennes and Seneffe, the winding canal took a height difference of more than 60 meters. In the 19th century, 16 locks were built here to bridge this height difference. Passing through all these locks, over a distance of about two kilometers, could take up to two days. Modernization of the canal required a solution to this problem in the form of a kind of boat lift.
The inclined plane was completed on 1 April 1968 after a construction period of six years. The plane is 1,400 meters long and bridges a drop of 68 meters, with a slope of almost 5%.
