You are now walking on the roof over the railway line linking Gare du Nord with Schuman. The Berlaymont building soon dominates the scenery. For a hundred years, the sisters of the Institut des Dames de Berlaymont gave a thorough education to girls from aristocratic circles here, until they were persuaded by prescient developers in the 1960s to sell their dilapidated building to the Belgian state. The Belgian state then constructed the headquarters of the European Commission here. The Berlaymont building underwent extensive renovation in the 1990s, but kept its striking appearance with its central column and four unequal wings. It is now circled by a pedestrian promenade and has a façade that is sensitive to heat and light and a structure resembling the prow of a ship on the roof, where the Commission meets.
