The iron pole was erected by the Belgian army in 1851. This pole served as a reference point for accurate distance and height measurements. The pole is a geodetic signal that is part of a geodetic triangulation network. The other two geodetic bases were located in Ostend and Hampiré.
When this area was still an extensive heathland, the wide vistas made it possible to carry out precise measurements to church towers and other beacons in the vicinity.
