The Tuyltermolen is located about 700m west of the former Cistercian abbey of Herkenrode in Kuringen-Hasselt, on the Tuilterdemer, which connects back to the Demer further west. To the south lies the Antwerp-Liège motorway and to the west a suppressed section of the Stokrooieweg.
The mill of Tuilt was already mentioned as a bannermill in a charter from 1083. The inhabitants of Tuilt were obliged to have their grain milled at this mill, which was donated to the abbey of Herkenrode by Count Lodewijk II of Loon in 1213. Probably, the mill and the surrounding territory had previously been used by a certain Tegnon, a vassal of the count.
