Weteren

Description

In the past - before the discovery of fertilizer - the land was made fertile by weteren. This means that soils were put under Demerwater for certain periods. The moat was used to
drain the water again. A very fertile layer of silt remained on the land.
Birds that feel at home in wet, open spaces find their way to Herkenrode.
Each period has its typical types:
- in the winter period including snipe, dodaars and krakeend
- in spring and autumn migration, including redshank, green-legged rider, white-legged, sandpiper and godwit
- during the breeding season, including lapwing, slobber and summer teal.
