In 2003-2004, all buildings on the site were examined for their stability and historical value. This provides the basis for a responsible restoration. In the execution of the works, traditional and modern restoration techniques were combined for optimal preservation of the original construction. All interventions are reversible as much as possible.
Reflection centre and monastery:
The Reflection Centre of Herkenrode Abbey is the beautifully restored abbess's residence from the 18th century.
This stately, white building with extensive English landscape park, was purchased in 1972 by the Sisters Regular Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre Bilzen. After thorough restoration and renovation, they opened the building as a retreat house in 1974.
Next to the reflection center is the monastery where the sister community has lived since 1984. There are currently nine Canonesses living there. In the adjacent modern church is the empty tomb that symbolizes the spirituality of the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre.
Church:
In 1986 the modern Monastery Church was built. This church is always open to the public.
Infirmary:
In 1982, the Infirmary and the remains of the dilapidated former 16th-century monastery buildings were also purchased.
Barn and old servants' quarters.
Chapel:
The date of construction of the sacrament chapel behind the choir of the disappeared church indicates 1661. It is not clear whether this building was originally only a sacristy with the necessities for the Eucharist or was used as a devotional chapel for the Blessed Sacrament of Miracle.
Stable:
The stables were built under abbess Anna Katharina de Lamboy (1653-1675). They then lay along the driveway that gave access to the abbess' quarter. They took care of the horses that were used to pull the carriages.
After the restoration, a catering business will be housed here.
