Description

The Bezemstraat is located just along the valley floor of the Rattendaal valley. The more fertile lands lie along these lower parts of the valley. On those valley bottoms you will find the fertile sandy loam soils on top of the tertiary clay. These sandy clay soils also retain water fantastically well and are also permeable enough so that the soils do not get too wet. You will usually find intensive horticulture on those valley bottoms. And so close to Brussels, the demand for vegetables was almost insatiable and therefore a market that was not far away. Horticulturists did and still do very well here.
