Where the Meer van Keerbergen is now, there used to be an airfield for sports planes. It was also used as a military airfield during WWII by the Germans. The airfield existed from 1932 to 1963. However, the airfield disappeared, and through the excavation of the sandy soil, the current lake of Keerbergen was created, which is 12 hectares large. There is a story that two German soldiers are buried who crashed nearby. But that story is not true. They are buried at the German Military Cemetery in Lommel.
The story was discussed in detail in the Canvas program Publiek Geheim and Mysteries of Flanders.
