St. Bernardus Church in Nieuwpoort-Bad

It is a neo-Romanesque structure from 1923, built to replace a similar church building from 1877. Not only during the First but also during the Second World War was the church heavily damaged. The repairs of 1947 also determine its current appearance. The façades made of yellow brick rest on a granite plinth. The stylistic distinction from the Gothic churches of Nieuwpoort-Stad and Sint-Joris is clear at a glance. In the Romanesque style, the round arch dominates while the ornamentation is generally minimal. However, the stylistic purity is somewhat compromised by the use of buttresses against the tower and the side aisles, an element from the Gothic style.
