In Membruggen, you drive towards the church (Zagerijstraat) instead of turning right towards junction 89.
Neoromanesque church dedicated to the patron saint of hunting, SAINT HUBERTUS. The square tower is built of marlstone. The lower layers date back to 1757. In 1726, the then church collapsed: two parishioners were buried under the rubble.
The church possesses several painted wooden statues from the 15th to 18th centuries, including those of Saint Hubertus and Francis of Assisi. In the cemetery, there are also two Gothic gravestones on display that date back to the 16th century.
SAINT HUBERTUS
Saint Hubert of Liège (7th century) converted after encountering a deer with a cross in its antlers during a hunting party. A voice told him to go to Lambertus, the bishop of Maastricht. Hubertus apprenticed under him and ultimately succeeded him as bishop.
Saint Hubertus is a popular saint in our region. He is the patron saint of hunting. In many municipalities, a Hubertus celebration still takes place every year, often in the open air, during which animals are blessed.
