This round chapel originally had a strategic function as a watchtower. This immediately explains the two loopholes in facades. In the 18th century the tower was shortened and transformed into a chapel. It was popularly called the 'White Chapel'.
The chapel is dedicated to Saint Apollonia. This saint lived in the third century. She was persecuted by pagans because she was a Christian. During her prosecution, her teeth were knocked out. That is why Apollonia is the patron saint of dentists and people used to come mainly on pilgrimage against toothaches.
