In Demerstraat, you pass on the right side a chapel that has been transformed into a gazebo. The gazebo was originally located in the garden of the rectory. The land belonged to the Teutonic Order and the chapel was built in the 18th century by the land commander of Alden Biesen.
THE TEUTONIC ORDER
The Teutonic Order, or Order of Teutons, was a religious knightly order founded in 1190 during the time of the Crusades. The members were noble knights who took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. In addition to spiritual care and charity, the ideal of the order was especially the fight against non-believers. The priest-brothers were in charge of pastoral care while the knight-brothers went to battle. Originally, the Teutonic Order was deployed in the Holy Land, but gradually its area of work expanded.
