St. Stephen's Church was founded in 1261 by the lords of Elderen, the inhabitants of the nearby castle. The current Gothic church dates from the 15th century and is built entirely in marlstone.
On the main altar is an Antwerp altarpiece from the 16th century with representations from the life of Christ and the Old Testament.
The church has some very old tombstones of the van Hamal family with representations of William of Hamal (1279) in full armor, Egidius of Hamal (1354) also in full armor, Arnold van Hamal (1456) and William of Hamal (1494) with his wife Maragaretha de Merode (1486). The van Elderen family is also represented: Anna van Elderen (1533) and Franciscus van Elderen (1320). The memorial stone of the de Renesse family dates from 1715.
